Health and Safety Update

In response to the recent outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in Harlem, we wanted to share the following information.

The health and safety of all participants, volunteers, staff, and spectators at New York Road Runners events is our top priority.

In consultation with our medical director, as well as officials from the New York State and New York City departments of health, we have determined that the 2025 Percy Sutton Harlem 5K, the walking event, and related Rising New York Road Runners events are safe to proceed as planned.

Legionnaires’ disease is typically contracted by inhaling aerosolized water droplets from sources such as cooling towers or air conditioning systems.

Legionnaires’ is not spread through drinking water. However, out of an abundance of caution, we will use bottled water to supply our fluid stations to ensure participant safety.
