July is Disability Pride Month, a time when we commemorate the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act on July 26, 1990.
At NYRR, we have a long history of advocacy and support of athletes with disabilities (AWDs) and a longtime partnership with
Achilles International. We celebrate athletes of all abilities all year long.

NYRR Expands Disability Initiatives
At New York Road Runners, we are expanding our efforts toward disability inclusion to further comply with city, state, and federal mandates by adding reasonable accommodation language to our race pages and installing an Assistive Listening System (ALS) at the NYRR RUNCENTER featuring the New Balance Run Hub, among other initiatives.

Susannah Scaroni has won all five editions of the Mastercard New York Mini 10K's wheelchair division. She's also a Run for the Future Ambassador, working with participants in NYRR’s free running and wellness program for New York City high school girls.

Dick Traum lost his right leg in an accident when he was 24. He later became the first known amputee runner to complete a marathon, and founded Achilles International.

New York Road Runners has a long history of inclusion of athletes with disabilities in our races and programs and a decades-long partnership with Achilles International, an organization that provides a community of support.
Youth Wheelchair Athletes at Junior Nationals
In 2022, for the first time, four NYC youth athletes competed at the Move United Junior Nationals, representing the Rising New York Road Runners Wheelchair Training program.
