Running Motto

Running since 1988, Steve still remembers the fear and trepidation of trying to complete his first 2-mile race. Since then, he’s completed multiple New York City Marathons and countless other shorter distances (including to the top of the Empire State Building), as well as a biathlon and a triathlon. He’s done 50Ks (six of them at Burning Man), 6-hour races, a 100K, a 24-hour (101 miles) event, a 72-hour (172 miles) event, and a 500K across Tennessee. Steve is RRCA certified (Levels I & II) and USA Track & Field certified (Level 1). Steve will try to convince you that it’s easier to run an ultra than a marathon. Bottom line— you can do more than you realize.

How would you describe your coaching style?
Warm and supportive. I delight in the opportunity to meet new runners, learn from them, and teach them how to run and become better runners. There is great joy in helping others accomplish their own individual goals.

What is your proudest coaching moment?
Seeing someone accomplish what they thought they couldn't.

What is your favorite workout to coach and why?
Long runs—slow and easy is your friend and allows you to build enormous aerobic capacity that will help you in all your runs. It's all about your aerobic base.

Where is your favorite place to run in New York City?
I love adventuring by running on new streets in neighborhoods I’ve never been to, but particularly along the waterfront and over bridges. I've run every single public street in Brooklyn and over 80% of Manhattan.
