Running MottoRunning encourages the belief that anything is possible. Sibel ran cross country in high school and would regularly finish last place in most meets. But she loved being outdoors in the fresh air, surrounded by positive teammates. She enjoyed those rare yet beautiful moments when one doesn't think they can possibly go on but finds strength deep inside and somehow still triumphs to the finish line. Sibel decided to run her first marathon with Team for Kids in 2010. She’s been hooked ever since, thanks to her coaches who believed in her. From last place to first place. She loves passing that along to everyone she coaches and mentors. You are always more capable than you think!
How would you describe your coaching style?
I believe in structure, but for the most part I'm not a very technical runner or coach. For example, if you want to improve your speed, know that running a little bit faster than your normal easy pace will help! You can but don't necessarily need to run certain laps or distances at a set time to accomplish a specific goal race time. If you do push yourself regularly out of your comfort zone once or twice a week, you will get better.
What is your proudest coaching moment?
I have two! One, I am incredibly proud of a client who I helped improve her marathon PR over 40 minutes and Boston-qualified for the first time, because I know how special that is. Two, I'm very proud of a new runner who I ran alongside for his first mile that he ran without walking.
What is your favorite workout to coach and why?
Fartleks! Swedish for "speed play." Run for fun. Running is a gift. We are so lucky we get to run!
