Thousands of NYC Children Kick Off Race Week at NYRR Youth Jamboree
Dr. Norbert Sander to Receive Abebe Bikila Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Sport of Distance Running at Event
Nearly 2,000 NYC students will participate in NYRR’s largest youth running event of the school year to kick off TCS New York City Marathon Race Week on Saturday, October 25th, 12 p.m. at The New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory, 216 Fort Washington Avenue, between 168th and 169th Streets. Press check-in begins at 11:30 a.m.
The NYRR Youth Jamboree, presented by Tata Consultancy Services, will feature a variety of free track & field events including relays, runs, long jump, and shot put for kids of all abilities in pre-K through high school. The day will also feature two special 55-meter dashes – one for pre-K students, and the “Forever Young Invitational” for seniors aged 75+, which will include more than a dozen participants in their 70s and 80s, as well as 99-year-old Ida Keeling, who recently broke the 100-meter world record. The groups will each be on hand to cheer and present each other with finisher ribbons.
As part of the event, NYRR will present President and Executive Director of the Armory Foundation and the 1974 New York City Marathon champion Dr. Norbert Sander with the Abebe Bikila Award for his outstanding commitment and contributions to the sport of distance running.
